Detroit-style pizza shop opening in South Tampa this summer

Tampa’s pizza scene is getting a new contender. SoDough Square, a Central-Florida-based Detroit-style pizza shop, is opening its first Tampa location later this summer at 138 S. Dale Mabry, the company shared last week.

The buttery pizza concept opened its first Tampa Bay Area location back in January at 6925 4th St. N in St. Pete, the first in its expansion to the Gulf Coast. The new South Tampa spot will mark the company’s fifth location. SoDough Square got its start in the Orlando area, where it quickly built a devoted following among locals and tourists alike and grew into three locations.

In addition to the classic Detroit-style pies, SoDough also offers Detroit-style garlic bread, coney dogs, salads, wings, and “Detroit Dough Dots,” which are essentially cinnamon bread bites. The pizzas themselves come in small or large sizes with more than a dozen varieties of toppings and specialties. This is a place for lovers of all forms of carbohydrate.

The keys to the pizza at SoDough are a 24-hour fermented dough, a house-made Detroit red sauce, a proprietary shredded brick cheese blend, and of course, the traditional pan preparation. SoDough outlined the process on their website.

“We begin by baking your Detroit-style pizza in traditional blue steel pans, sourced directly from Michigan, which impart the distinctive characteristics of this unique style. Every component is crafted in-house, including our signature Stanislaus tomato sauce and proprietary brick cheese blend, specifically shredded for SoDough.

“The true highlight, however, is our high-hydration, authentic Detroit dough. While this pizza is celebrated for many qualities, its standout feature is the “frico” — the caramelized cheese crust that defines its style and flavor. We take great care to use only the finest, freshest, and most flavorful ingredients, ensuring an exceptional culinary experience.”
