City to unveil new eco-counter to encourage more bike activity on Tampa’s Green Spine

The City of Tampa has unveiled its first Eco-Counter display at the corner of North Boulevard and West Cass Street. This digital unit uses camera sensors to count pedestrians and bicyclists in real-time, showcasing their presence in the urban environment. The Eco-Counter displays daily and annual totals, offering a clear view of the area’s foot and bike traffic.

The Eco-Counter not only promotes a healthy lifestyle but also provides valuable data. By tracking the numbers, the city can monitor usage patterns and trends along the Green Spine. The increasing counts aim to encourage more people to choose biking over driving, contributing to the data.

Tampa currently offers over 130 miles of bike facilities, with more on the way through projects like the upcoming West Riverwalk and Green Spine extensions. These projects will connect over a dozen neighborhoods with safer streets, sidewalks, and protected bike lanes. Recent and upcoming Quick Build projects also feature new bicycle paths. These bike lanes align with the administration’s M.O.V.E.S. Plan, which focuses on safe and equitable transportation, fostering a healthier, safer, and more connected city.
