The City of Tampa is making a major stride toward making Tampa safer for pedestrians and cyclists. A new quick-build project, part of Tampa’s Vision Zero Campaign, is set to transform Cleveland Street west of Willow Avenue to Parker Street.

The Cleveland Street Quick Build safety improvements include:

  • Converting one of the three existing travel lanes into a protected bicycle lane with approximately 80 new on-street parking spaces. The bicycle lane, just under a mile long, will eventually connect with the future West River BUILD project, expanding Tampa’s Green Spine.
  • The creation of Tampa’s first protected intersection. Located at Cleveland and S. Hyde Park Avenue, the design keeps bicyclists separate from cars, providing them with a dedicated path through the intersection and the right-of-way with turning vehicles.
  • Drivers exiting the Selmon Expressway at the Willow Avenue exit ramp will have much better visibility and safer access while merging onto Cleveland Street with oncoming vehicles.

Making streets safer for cyclists and pedestrians in Tampa

Vision Zero is all about making our roads safer by eliminating deadly and severe accidents, while also promoting safe and fair travel for everyone. It started in Sweden back in the 1990s and has been a big hit across Europe. Now, it’s starting to catch on in major cities across the U.S.

The Vision Zero Network was set up to keep this momentum going and bring Vision Zero to more communities in the U.S. Their strategy is based on the idea that people will make mistakes, so they focus on reducing and eventually eliminating the chances that these mistakes lead to fatalities. Tampa joined the Vision Zero Network in 2020, officially committing to this mission.
