Registration is now open for those who want to build a craft!

One of the wildest spectacles on Earth is returning to Tampa for the first in more than a decade. The iconic Red Bull Flugtag is coming to Tampa Bay on Saturday, November 9, bringing 100,000+ spectators to witness the daring and creative feats of flight. Creative local thrill-seekers are encouraged to apply here for a chance at competing, with registration opening on July 8.

We’ve all seen the videos online of the man-made and human-powered crafts soaring off of towers and (eventually) into the water, and now the worldwide phenomenon is returning to our favorite body of water for the first since 2011. Teams construct their own craft – powered only by human strength and launched from a raised platform – and compete to see who can fly the farthest before landing, using only a running start for momentum.

Red Bull Flugtag Tampa Bay will take place at the Tampa Convention Center, located at 333 S Franklin St, with a 27-foot-tall flight deck to be constructed overlooking the water. The free-to-attend event was announced today with a press conference at the Tampa Convention Center with Tampa Mayor Jane Castor and Hillsborough County Commissioner Ken Hagan.

On the afternoon of Red Bull Flugtag, teams of up to five people will compete with each other as they launch one-of-a-kind airships off the 27-foot-tall flight deck in front of more than 100,000 expected spectators. Up to 40 teams will be judged on the design of their craft, creativity of their pre-flight skit, and the distance of their flight as they compete for exclusive Red Bull experiences, meet-and-greets with Red Bull athletes, and more. Winners will be determined by what organizers promise to be an incredible lineup of judges to be announced at a later date.

The legendary Red Bull event has been held in more than 50 countries and has hosted in excess of nine million spectators worldwide. Over the years, Flugtag has seen winning crafts such as Greased Lightning (Portland, Oregon, 2008), Flight at the Roxbury (Pittsburgh, 2017) and last year’s Champions, Flite Test (Cincinnati, 2023). The World Record for the longest flight currently sits at 258 feet set by The Chicken Whisperers in Long Beach, CA in 2013.

Applications to compete in Tampa’s Red Bull Flugtag open on July 8, when those imaginative and brave people with an interest in defying gravity can sign up at RedBull.com/redbullflugtagtampa. Registration remains open through September 19.
