Ahead of Memorial Day Weekend, a massive military spectacle is taking over Tampa Bay. The annual SOF Week kicked off at the Tampa Convention Center, and as always, the big highlight for locals is the Battle in the Bay Capability Demonstration.

Battle in the Bay takes place on the water on Wednesday, May 20, from 12-1 pm, with the best viewing areas located outside the Tampa Convention Center, along the Riverwalk, on Harbour Island, and along Bayshore Boulevard. Tens of thousands are expected to gather for the free display of military personnel and craft.

The “Battle” is a simulation put on by U.S. Special Operations Forces in conjunction with 10 partner nations. With helicopters, paratroopers, simulated explosions, tactical ships and more, the showcase is “a high-stakes simulation featuring the future of special operations technology and tactical innovation.”

If you can’t make it in person (or just don’t want to fight the crowds), you can watch the livestream here. The battle showcases three USSOCOM keys: domination, integration, and deployment. This is demonstrated through air superiority, coordination with partner forces, and precision entry.

Some important notes to be aware of, from the City of Tampa and the Tampa Convention Center:

  • Arrive Early: Space is first-come, first-served and will fill up fast!
  • Traffic Advisory: Expect extra traffic in the Downtown area. Franklin Street by the convention center and the Harbour Island Bridge will be closed Mon-Fri during the daytime hours.
  • Parking: TCC Parking Garage will be closed, use Pam Iorio or Fort Brooke garages.
  • Expect Noise: Don’t be alarmed by loud noises, it’s all part of the demonstration.
