Playa Taco Cocina y Tequilería now open, the only beachside Mexican restaurant on St. Pete Beach

The newest Mexican restaurant on the beaches is also the only Mexican restaurant that’s actually on the beach. Playa Taco Cocina y Tequilería is now open at Island Grand at TradeWinds (5500 Gulf Blvd), bringing casual digs and tasty food and drink to St. Pete Beach.

Inside, a vibrant retro bus transformed into dining seating adds a playful touch to the lively atmosphere. The beautiful bar is the centerpiece of Playa Taco, and it’s with good reason. They have one of the best tequila selections on the beach, along with more than half a dozen types of margaritas (go for the Millionaire Margarita if you’re feeling frisky). While the beachy vibes give the spot a laid-back feel, Playa Taco has serious cocktail chops with everything from a housemade cucumber ranch water and a mango mezcalita to the bourbon pineapple smash and the smoked Oaxacan old fashioned.

As you might imagine, the tacos take top billing on the dining menu, and they’re more than worth the trip on their own. We’re partial to the crispy Baja fish and the chicken tinga we tried on our visit, but they have plenty of options, including multiple all-veggie tacos. If you prefer a corn tortilla, we highly recommend the tostadas, served with your choice of shrimp ceviche, barbacoa, or chicken tinga.

The dining menu rounds out with six bowl options (including Gulf shrimp), soups and salads, and a lengthy starters list. The house made guac is an excellent pick, while the Macho Nachos and Three Amigos Quesadillas could stand alone as full meals in their own right. Chicharrones, street corn, and Eddie’s Queso (go for the chorizo add on) offer snackier options for the table.

If somehow you save room for dessert, options include churros, tres leches cake, and caramel flan. Pair any with their Austin-style Mexican Martini and you’ll be in heaven.

Of course, one of the best parts of Playa Taco has nothing to do with the food and drink. This is where salt on the rim meets sand in your toes. If it’s been a hot day and you need to cool off out of the sun, grab a seat inside, order a cold drink, and bask in the Gulf front views, swaying palms included. Or, it can serve as the perfect starter spot. Get your fix of food and drink on the patio by the water, then dive right in.

Either way, you have options, as Playa Taco is open daily from 11 am to midnight, with the kitchen closing at 10 pm. Pro tip: don’t miss the daily specials:
