Manatees, affectionately known as “sea cows,” have a natural attraction to warm water, making Tampa Electric’s Big Bend Power Station (6990 Dickman Road, Apollo Beach) a winter haven for these gentle creatures. The power station circulates water from Tampa Bay for cooling, returning it clean and warm—an irresistible sanctuary for manatees escaping the cold.
To celebrate this remarkable migration, Tampa Electric created the Manatee Viewing Center, a state and federally designated manatee sanctuary. Here, visitors can observe these iconic marine mammals in their natural habitat while learning about conservation efforts.

The center is open daily from November 1 to April 15, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. (trails close at 4 p.m.), but is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and closes early at 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve. For more details, call 813-228-4289.
A record-breaking family-friendly experience
In January 2024, the Manatee Viewing Center set a stunning new record, hosting 1,100 manatees at one time in a single day—far surpassing the previous record of 850 set last winter.
While manatees are the highlight, there’s so much more to explore. As part of the Florida Conservation & Technology Center, the facility offers interactive exhibits, educational displays, and scenic trails for guests of all ages. To navigate the campus with ease, visitors can download a free map through the Avenza app.
Parking and admission are completely free, making it one of the most accessible and enriching attractions in the region. Service animals are welcome, though pets are not permitted. For large groups, calling ahead to reserve a spot is recommended.
Whether you’re a local resident or a visitor to the area, the Manatee Viewing Center is a must-see destination that combines Florida wildlife, conservation, and family fun. Learn more on the center’s official website.
