We can practically smell the burgers and hear the marching bands – college football is almost here, and with it comes what may well be the most exciting season ever for the University of South Florida. In year two under head coach Alex Golesh, the star-powered Bulls look primed to build on the excitement created during last year’s huge turnaround, and tickets to see all the action at Raymond James Stadium are on sale now.
USF put an exclamation point on Golesh’s opening campaign when they trounced Syracuse 45-0 in the Boca Raton bowl to cap the 2023 season, and nearly as soon as the the final second ticked off the clock, all eyes turned to the 2024 team, dreams of what they might accomplish growing every day. Now with a full 18 months of learning Golesh’s high-flying offense (not to mention defensive coordinator Todd Orlando’s aggressive and disruptive defense), the upstart team from 2023 is poised to be a breakout star in 2024, and not just in the AAC.
While the rest of us spent the offseason watching basketball or the Olympics, Golesh was toiling away, and the results were the top-ranked recruiting class in the American Athletic Conference in 2024, flush with high-end talent and portal transfers from some of the country’s most highly sought after stars. Of course, perhaps Golesh’s best job of recruiting was in-house, and that is a primary reason for so much of the excitement.
Junior quarterback Byrum Brown was the breakout star in Golesh’s first season at the helm, racking up 37 total touchdowns and more than 4,000 yards combined between his prolific passing and timely rushing ability last year. While so many of the conference’s star players from last season entered the portal to cash in on their success, Brown chose to stay at home and help Golesh and his teammates continue the journey they started last year. It’s a path they hope will lead them to the top of the AAC, and perhaps even a spot in the newly-expanded 12-team playoff.
With so much expectation, 2024 may very well be the most highly-anticipated season in the history of USF football, and with an incredible home slate of games at Raymond James Stadium this fall, we’ll get to watch history being made in person. The Bulls open the season on August 31, kicking off against Bethune-Cookman to start the year off. From there, the incredible six-game home schedule for USF marches onward through the end of November, welcoming some of the biggest programs in the country to Ray J.
