If you are not aware by now, Tampa’s culinary scene is thriving. The area has transformed over the past 6 years into a foodie paradiso, and The Heights District is at the center of this Tampa-morphosis. That much is evident with the imminent arrivals of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, Strandhill Public, and Xochitl to the area.
Here’s the breakdown of three spots opening in 2020 that you need to keep on your radar in Tampa.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream
Tampa is getting another James Beard-winning chef. It was recently announced that Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream, from the mind of Jeni Britton Bauer, will be setting up shop under the Pearl, a short walk away from both Armature Works and The Heights Public Market.
“We are excited to bring Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams to the The Heights District – and to the Tampa Bay Area,” said Chas Bruck, Co-Developer for The Heights District and Armature Works. “We see the brand as being a perfect fit for The Heights.”
Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream is already available in select Publix and Whole Foods Locations, but soon patrons can get Gooey Butter Cake ice cream on a cone – frick yeah. Construction is expected to commence in early 2020, with the store slated to open in summer of 2020 in a 1,600 square foot space at 305 West Palm Avenue.
Jeni’s is also planning a location in the Sparkman Wharf area.
Xochitl
Pronounced so-cheel, this taco spot will be another impressive Mexican spot in the Heights area. According to its website, the Mexican kitchen is going to be slinging up handcrafted modern “carefully curated dishes to pair with an impressive roster of drinks and style.”
A recent instagram post highlighted some queso fundido with chorizo and some awesome decor. Xochitl is described by its own Instagram as “a Goddess inspired vision of culinary greatness.” ‘Nuff said.
Located at 307 W. Palm Ave.
Strandhill Public
Inspired by the owner’s upbringing in Sligo, Ireland, Strandhill Public is opening a second location in Tampa Heights. The bar and restaurant’s 124-seat Tampa Heights location at 309 W Palm Ave., also on the ground floor of the Pearl apartment building, will be opening very soon.
We are big fans of the Irish Whiskey BBQ sauce slathered over their burger – tasted at their Brandon location – but we recommend trying their bangers and mash – classic Irish fare – and their shepherd’s pie.
