In its ongoing mission to enhance the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway, the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) unveileld fresh updates to its renovation plan, potentially altering the commute to Amalie Arena. The news was first reported by The Tampa Bay Business Journal.
The proposed overhaul targets Exit 6B, currently guiding traffic to Channelside Drive near the arena. Under the new blueprint, this exit will shift northeast, leading drivers towards Whiting Street. These changes reflect THEA’s commitment to improving travel efficiency amidst the evolving dynamics of downtown Tampa.

Additionally, Exit 6A is slated for expansion and elongation, aligning with THEA’s goal of optimizing traffic flow along the expressway.
Approval is a crucial step before design and construction can commence. THEA aims to wrap up the Whiting Street Project Development and Environment study by the spring or summer of this year. Subsequent approval from the board and securing funding from the Florida Department of Transportation are vital to realizing the project’s vision.
