New ferry service proposed for Tampa Bay region

Representatives with the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority revealed renderings for a countywide ferry service during a Clearwater City Council meeting back in May of 2021. Less than a year later, representatives remain hopeful this service could change the transportation game in the region.

PSTA is working with the Clearwater Ferry to understand their current cost model, ability to continue service, and proposals for increased public investment. They currently have no intention of acquiring Clearwater Ferry, and haven’t entered any formal agreement with the service.

Connecting the county with new ferry service

“If local match and grant funding was secured, we would continue to work with our local partners to select an appropriate private operator,” wrote Stephanie Rank, Public Relations Coordinator for PSTA in an email to I Love the ‘Burg. “That may include several vendors to build out a county-wide system as integrated with PSTA.”

Ferry service has proven popular in Tampa and neighboring St. Petersburg. The Cross-Bay Ferry recently relaunched, with service set to continue through the spring.
