The evolution of Tampa’s Riverwalk continues in a big way in January. The team behind Hotel Cala says the new resort is slated for a January debut, replacing the former Sheraton at 200 N Ashley Drive.
The Hilton-backed hotel will be highlighted by a pair of upscale new food and beverage concepts. Inside, LAVO will be the signature restaurant at the resort, offering elevated coastal Italian fare. BarOnda will give guests a more casual but still elevated experience, with the restaurant and bar overlooking the water.

Dubbed an “urban resort,” the 281-room Hotel Cala is nearing completion of extensive renovation by renowned design firm Rockwell Group. An announcement said their design “draws architectural and aesthetic inspiration from Tampa’s waterfront setting, tropical character and multicultural heritage, including its Italian and Cuban roots.”
The new dining concepts will be operated by Tao Group Hospitality, a global hospitality group. LAVO already has several locations across the globe, including las Vegas and Singapore. The menu is centered on house-made pastas, whole-grain pizzas made with single-source flour, and signature dishes including The Meatball, featuring Wagyu, Italian sausage and veal topped with whipped ricotta. The team promises an inspired cocktail program and curated wine collection to match the dining.
The team says BarOnda will offer “a more casual, vibrant waterfront setting,” focused on cocktails and shareable bites, “creating a natural complement to LAVO and Hotel Cala’s connection to the Riverwalk.”

In addition F&B and its lodging accommodations, Hotel Cala will feature a resort-style pool deck with cabanas, lounge seating and lush landscaping; a 24-hour fitness center overlooking the pool; and 10,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space.
“For more than half a century, this site has been part of the fabric of downtown Tampa, and Hotel Cala gives us the opportunity to reimagine it for a new generation,” said Neil Luthra, founding partner, Newbond Holdings. “We wanted to create something that feels distinctly Tampa. A new destination along The Riverwalk that brings together hospitality, dining and culture in a way that will give both visitors and locals a new reason to experience this part of the city.”
