The Hillsborough Transit Authority (HART) announced that, effective immediately, all HART bus services, including HARTPlus and HARTFlex, will operate fare-free until October 21, 2024.

This initiative is designed to support the community’s transportation needs during ongoing recovery efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, ensuring residents have access to essential services without financial barriers.

The decision to implement fare-free service is driven by three critical factors, according to HART officials:

  1. Emergency Transportation: Residents traveling to Emergency Comfort Stations established by the County will also benefit from free transit, enabling access to vital services during this challenging time.
  2. Aid for Displaced Residents: Fare-free transit will help displaced residents, ensuring they have the means to move around safely.
  3. Support for Students: All school students will have access to fare-free bus trips, ensuring they can attend school without the burden of transportation costs.

Easing the burden on residents and riders after major storms

Hillsborough Transit Authority (HART) bus operators face increased challenges as they navigate detours and route adjustments due to hurricane damage. To address these difficulties, HART has implemented a fare-free policy, allowing drivers to focus on safely transporting passengers, whether for education or emergency needs.

This decision to offer free transit during the extended Hillsborough County State of Emergency aims to support the community through the recovery period. By eliminating transportation costs, HART seeks to ease financial strain on families, ensure students can maintain their access to education, and provide residents with unburdened access to emergency services.
