As the Atlantic Hurricane Season approaches, starting this Saturday, June 1, and running through November 30, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting above-normal hurricane activity this year. There are an estimated 17 to 25 named storms, 8 to 13 of which may become hurricanes.
The City of Tampa is urging residents to start preparing now for potential severe weather.

One of the most important tools for emergency preparedness is your Disaster Supply Kit. You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water, and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least 72 hours. First responders and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster but they may not be able to reach everyone immediately. You will get help, but it may take hours or even days after a disaster. Download the FEMA Disaster Supply Checklist (PDF) or visit the FEMA Build a Kit website

Reidents are encouraged to enroll in the Alert Tampa Emergency Notification System. Once you sign up you will receive emergency notifications directly from the city to your phone, email or text as soon as it goes out. Getting this critical information as soon as possible is key to becoming #TampaReady.
Sandbags are only available after an emergency declaration has been made. If you need sandbags for additional structural support, every property owner in the City of Tampa is entitled to receive ten sandbags per storm event. Depending on the expected severity of the storm one or more locations may be activated as a distribution site. You can learn more about distribution sites on the City of Tampa’s website.
