Thailand Restaurant is known as the first restaurant to bring Thai food to the city. After more than 45 years in Tampa, the owners are ready to retire. Located at 5252 S Dale Mabry Hwy, the restaurant will remain open for take out through the end of July.
Thise closure was first put on our radar via a report by WTSP, and you can read their full report here.

Thailand Restaurant first opened its door to customers in 1979. “It is the first Thai restaurant in South Tampa to give patrons a taste of true authentic Thai food,” notes the Thambundit family. This dreamy restaurant boasts a Thai ambiance. Longtime guest grew to appreciate the aesthetic that ranged from a modern classical twist of Thai to a more traditional old-style Thai décor.
Thailand Restaurant is a Tampa culinary treasure
Chef Moo and the entire Thailand Restaurant team became known for their Thai Style Beef Salad, Pad Thai, and Curry Duck. “The flavor, spiciness, and authenticity of the dishes, ambiance, and service are what keep patrons coming back for more at Thailand Restaurant,” writes Chef Moo.
Another dish you need to have on your radar before they officially close on July 28: crab rangoon. The dish is having a moment on Instagram and TikTok, and few establishments do it better than Thailand Restaurant according to their customers.
According to WTSP, Chef Moo has already been asked to write a cook book, and sell her famous sauces on the side. While we’re sad to see the restaurant go, we are glad the owners will get a much deserved break. The owners daughter, Amp C Thambundit, wrote the following:
“My parents, the owners of Thailand Restaurant in Tampa, are retiring after 45 years! If you didn’t know, here’s your chance to still stop by and get some food before the doors close!”
They are still open for takeout and quick dine-in until the end of July, and then going on a much deserved vacation.
