Tampa is about to experience a new level of movie magic. Sun-Ray Cinema debuted at the end of 2024 at 12322 University Mall Court, offering a new home for independent films, cult classics, and under-the-radar gems. But more than just a cinema, this venue also serves one of the best menus in Tampa—and for me, a pretty robust array of vegan options. I’m thinking about The People’s BBQ Tofu Bahn Mi.
The menu also features a tongue-in-cheek “wildly inauthentic” Cuban Sandwich, a kimchi K-Pop hotdog, and swamp fries smothered in kimchi, egg, queso, marinara, and a splash of spirulina. Vegan milkshakes are also available. The best part is that you order at concessions and then have your order brought straight to your seat.

Uncomfortable brunch arrives in Tampa
Uncomfortable Brunch, the film series known for pairing transgressive cinema with a delicious brunch, is coming to Tampa. Starting Sunday, April 6, 2025, Sun-Ray Cinema will host this unique experience, bringing unsettling films to a wider audience. Beginning in May, screenings will take place on the first Saturday of every month.
The Tampa debut will feature Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975), Pier Paolo Pasolini’s brutal adaptation of the Marquis de Sade’s infamous work. Known for its shocking violence and political themes, Salò is a fitting choice as it was the first film shown at the original Uncomfortable Brunch in Orlando. After 11 years of success in Orlando, Tampa cinephiles will now have the chance to enjoy this distinctive combination of provocative cinema and great food.
Special events & live performances
Sun-Ray Cinema is bringing more than just movies—it’s building a community. With its carefully curated films, creative programming, and delicious food, this new addition promises to become a favorite destination for locals.
