The phenomenal actor, writer, director Paul Reubens passed away earlier this week. Reubens is best known for his character Pee Wee Herman. The transformative artist captivated multiple generations of viewers with his quirky jubilance, keen writing, and comic timing. Tampa’s movie palace, Tampa Theatre, will host a special memorial for the actor on Friday, August 4, from 4pm-7:30pm.
They will be screening clips from his film and television appearances, interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, chunks of his TV shows and whatever other rare odds-and-ends they can scratch up.

Tampa Theatre addressed why they are currently unable to screen any of the main Pee Wee Herman films and specials:
“Let’s address the multi-colored circus elephant in the room: we’re not showing Big Adventure, which was our first choice. Warner Bros., who own the rights, have decided to keep it out of cinemas for the whole of 2023,” write Theatre officials. “This policy is disappointing, but was in place months before Reubens’ death. Neither of the sequels, Big Top Pee-wee or Netflix’s Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, are available either.”
This is a FREE community screening. No ticket necessary. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. You can learn more by visiting the official event page.
“Reubens’ bravery as a performer, his joyful spirit and his commitment to following his own absurd sense of humor shone out from the first time he donned the gray suit to today,” write Tampa Theatre on its website. “Tampa Theatre invites you to commemorate the life and career of Paul Reubens with us and each other. This is why we take pictures: they last longer.”
The iconic movie palace is located at 711 N Franklin Street.
