When you go to Bern’s Steakhouse and visit the Harry Waugh Dessert Room, one of the most memorable aspects – besides drinking Port wine inside a wine barrel – is the macadamia nut ice cream. Now, thanks to the opening of Little Midway, Bern’s spin-off ice cream housed in the former Chocolate Pi space at the Epicurean Hotel, you can grab this ice cream and go.
Bern and Gert Laxer took seven years to perfect this ice cream, and it will be the crown jewel of Little Midway. The classic-style ice cream parlor is named after the luncheonette operated by the Laxers in 1954, which sold sandwiches and ice cream off Cass Street.

What is to come was showcased at the Epicurean’s Edge rooftop bar this past weekend. Heather Birr, a pastry chef at Bern’s will be overseeing Little Midway and said that ice cream shop will open sometime soon. She also stated the ice cream parlor will have shakes, sundaes and waffle ice cream sandwiches.
Like the original luncheonette that was inspired by carnival midways – the row of a carnival where the games and sideshows set up – Little Midway’s whimsy is already visible in the polka-dot-branding. Before the actual opening, Little Midway will be hosting an ice cream social at the Epicurean as well as a brunch at Haven.
