The vow renewal ceremony at Tampa Theatre has become a local tradition for lovebirds

There’s no love greater than popcorn and Diet Coke at a movie theatre. It makes sense that downtown’s iconic movie palace would serve as a must-visit Valentine’s Day spot. Tampa Theatre has long been a stage for romance in the Bay area—whether it’s a first date under its starry ceiling or a proposal on its grand stage. This Valentine’s Day, the historic theater again turns the spotlight on love with a special event designed to swoon your heart.

On Friday, February 14, the iconic movie palace will offer a one-of-a-kind experience for couples and would-be newlyweds alike. The evening starts at 7:00 p.m. with Valentine’s Vows, a mass wedding vow renewal ceremony hosted by Tampa Theatre President & CEO John Bell. Though Bell is more known for his leadership at the theater, he’s also an ordained minister (certified online), making him the perfect officiant for a night filled with love and laughter.

A downtown Tampa tradition steeped in love

Couples can renew their vows in front of the majestic theater’s stunning backdrop, with a ceremony tailor-made for movie buffs. Expect romantic movie quotes and heartfelt declarations to make you believe in “happily ever after.” After the vows, the night will include a champagne toast to celebrate love, commitment, and all the great memories made at Tampa Theatre.

But that’s not all. Bell will also perform legal weddings that evening for anyone looking to take their love story to the next chapter. All you need to bring is your marriage license, and he’ll be ready to officiate—making it the perfect time for those looking to say “I do” in a unique, historic setting.

Film screening following the vow renewals

Following the vow renewals, the romantic vibes continue with a screening of Our Hospitality, the classic 1923 silent comedy starring Buster Keaton. In the film, Keaton’s character, Willie McKay, unknowingly becomes entangled in a family feud when he visits the South to claim his inheritance. The hilarity of the situation escalates when he meets the beautiful Virginia Canfield and ends up as a guest in her family home—where a longstanding family feud means Virginia’s relatives must keep him safe, even at the risk of their reputation.

The screening begins at 7:30 p.m., and national treasure Steven Ball will accompany the film with a live performance on Tampa Theatre’s Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ, adding another layer of magic to the evening.
