The University of South Florida has made history with the launch of its first-ever women’s lacrosse team, and at the helm is Head Coach Mindy McCord. For McCord, the opportunity to build a program from the ground up is nothing short of surreal. The team kicked off its historic season with 19 goals in a big win over KSU at Corbett Stadium (12503 USF Elm Drive), a record tied with a victory over St. Bonaventure on March 2. Get on the bandwagon now—this team is cooking!
Building a new Bulls dynasty from the ground up
Coach McCord’s focus extends both on and off the field. “It’s such an honor and privilege to coach this team,” she shared. “It’s an incredible feeling to be part of something brand new. Years from now, we’ll look back and say, ‘We were the first.’”

Heading into their inaugural season, McCord’s focus has been both on and off the field. Her goal? Establishing a strong identity for the team.
“We have players from all class years coming together for the first time, and I’ve been surprised by how prepared and confident they are,” she said. “Our mission is to get USF on the map.”
Recruiting the right athletes was key. McCord sought players who embody the team’s core pillars: family, love, trust, leadership, service, and faith.
“We’re building a culture where the team comes first,” she explained. “We want to share behaviors that create a great team environment, enjoy time together like a family, serve each other and the community, and develop future leaders.”
From first steps to championship aspirations
USF’s short-term goal is to compete at the highest level while embracing the learning process. “We talk about winning, but it’s a journey,” McCord noted. “It’s about staying present, growing from game to game, and being ready for every situation. Our long-term vision? To contend for a national championship.”
Growing the game of lacrosse in Tampa
The excitement surrounding the team is rippling through the university and the Tampa Bay community. USF’s first game shattered Florida’s lacrosse attendance record, drawing 2,386 fans, and cumulative attendance for early games has exceeded expectations.
“You don’t see lacrosse everywhere across the country, so it’s been amazing to build lifelong fans,” McCord said. “We want people to know our players as individuals and to engage with the team and be part of this experience.”
A super fun, family-friendly experience
Beyond game day, the program is committed to fostering community connections. Fans can enjoy events like Bark in the Park on Sundays, where families can bring their pets, picnic on the hill, and enjoy a full day of entertainment at Corbett Stadium.
McCord’s passion extends beyond lacrosse. She emphasizes a “student-first” mentality, ensuring athletes can pursue any major while excelling on the field.
“We’re leveraging everything USF offers to enhance their academic and personal growth,” she said. “We have a development program that pairs players with mentors in their sophomore year to prepare them for professional success.”
Unique themes and activations for kids and young fans
The team’s dedication to community outreach continues throughout the season. Each game features a unique theme, from honoring first responders to hosting youth lacrosse clinics.
“This weekend, we’ll have little kids playing peewee lacrosse on the field,” McCord shared. “It’s all about growing the game and making a lasting impact.”
With strong leadership, an engaged community, and a clear vision, USF women’s lacrosse is already making waves. The Bulls are not just building a team—they’re shaping a legacy.
