In a heartbreaking announcement in October, the University of South Florida shared the news that Bulls men’s basketball coach Amir Abdur-Rahim passed away at the age of 43. Abdur-Rahim died from complications arising during a medical procedure at a Tampa-area hospital. Known for his charismatic presence and relentless drive, he leaves a profound legacy within USF and beyond.

To honor Abdur-Rahim’s legacy, USF athletes across all sports will wear his initials, “AAR,” on their uniforms. In addition, the end-zone student section at the Yuengling Center will be renamed the “Amir Abdur-Rahim Student Section.”

USF and Kennesaw State will honor Abdur-Rahim’s memory with an annual basketball game, named the “Love Wins Classic.” Rev. David Lane, USF’s team chaplain, captured his impact, saying, “Love wins every single time. Amir reflected God’s love and left us with hope and joy in all he did.”

A powerful legacy left at the University of South Florida

“Coach Abdur-Rahim was authentic, driven, and his infectious personality captivated all of Bulls Nation,” USF Athletic Director Michael Kelly said. “His impact on our student-athletes, the university, and the community is lasting. We are supporting his family, team, and athletics staff as they navigate this tremendous loss.”

Before joining USF, Abdur-Rahim rose to prominence through his remarkable turnaround of Kennesaw State’s basketball program, guiding them to an NCAA Tournament appearance in the 2022-23 season. His coaching journey from Kennesaw State to USF reflected a commitment to excellence and transformation, inspiring players and fans alike.

The Bulls will wear his initials all season

Abdur-Rahim leaves behind his wife and three children, as well as a large family, including his brother, G League President Shareef Abdur-Rahim. Tributes from the basketball community have poured in. George Washington coach Chris Caputo expressed his grief, stating, “This is truly a terrible tragedy. Amir was a good man and an excellent coach. Please pray for his family.”

Interim head coach Ben Fletcher, Abdur-Rahim’s longtime assistant, fondly recalled his mentor as a devoted family man, storyteller, music enthusiast, and “a lover of debate and great arguments.”
