Tampa Bay is gearing up for takeoff as the top 34 teams have been selected for the first Red Bull Flugtag Tampa since 2011. Announced during a lively event at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa, “these teams will showcase their creativity and engineering skills on November 9 at the Tampa Convention Center.”

Over 200 applications poured in from across the country, but nearly all selected teams hail from Tampa and surrounding areas. Local universities like the University of South Florida, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and Florida Atlantic University are well-represented among the contenders. The event promises to be a major spectacle, with teams launching their handmade flying machines off a 27-foot platform.
Nearly 80,000 attendees expected for the Red Bull Flugtag in Tampa
Rob Higgins, Executive Director of the Tampa Bay Sports Commission, highlighted the community’s enthusiasm for the event. “More than 200 teams applying to be a part of Red Bull Flugtag shows just how much our community truly loves this event. Congratulations to all of the teams that were selected. We can’t wait to see your aircrafts take to our sky.”
Among the notable entries are the Fantastic Flying Legends of Wrestling, two-time Flugtag Tampa champions, and JoogSquad, a popular YouTube group. Other exciting teams include the Tampa Bay Rays and “Put a Wing on It,” featuring NFL champions Chris Long and Beau Allen. These teams, along with a mix of college students, local businesses, and friends, drew inspiration from everything from wrestling icons to college mascots.
Judged on design, pre-flight skit, and performance
Each team will be judged on craft design, the creativity of their pre-flight skit, and the distance their machine flies. Craft concepts are already live on the Red Bull Tampa teams page, offering a glimpse of what fans can expect on launch day.
