The Independent Bar and Cafe (5016 N Florida Ave) owner, Veronica Danko, will be knighted by the Belgian Brewers Guild this September at the prestigious Belgian Beer Weekend in Brussels. This honor recognizes her nearly two decades of dedication to promoting Belgian beer culture in Tampa Bay.
The Belgian Beer Weekend, held annually at Brussels’ Grand-Place, brings together over 70 members of Belgium’s brewing community. This year’s festival, running from September 6-8, 2024, will feature over 500 Belgian beers from 53 breweries. The event, established in 1998, celebrates Belgium’s exceptional beer heritage. Each year, the National Federation of Belgian Brewers selects notable ambassadors who have significantly promoted Belgian beer. Veronica will be honored with the Knighthood of the Brewer’s Paddle.

A special distinction for Tampa’s beloved bar and gathering place
Veronica opened the original Independent in St. Petersburg in 2005 with a focus on European beers. She expanded to Tampa in 2009, creating a “World Class Beer Hall” that features local, national, and international selections. She and her team host events with Belgian breweries, including the annual “Cheers to Belgian Beer!” festival and Belgian Independence Day celebrations. Her commitment extends beyond local initiatives—Veronica has sent staff to Belgium for training and has personally visited many Belgian breweries to build relationships and foster collaborations.
“Veronica has been a strong proponent of Belgian beer for nearly 20 years,” says Marco Passarella, Sales Director at St. Bernardus Brewery. “She is a true ambassador of Belgian beer culture.”
Veronica’s knighthood solidifies her role as a leader in the craft beer community and celebrates her passion for Belgian beer culture. The Knighthood Ceremony occurs on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at 11:30am (CEST).
