The International Cuban Sandwich Festival brought a huge crowd to historic Ybor City, and a slew of vendors from around the world participated in the competition. In the category of “Traditional Cuban Sandwich” Tampa’s own Chef Alex Planchart took home first place.

“I’m proud to say I took home 1st place this year in Worlds Best Traditional Cuban Sandwich! It’s a dream come true!,” wrote Chef Alex on Instagram. “If you would like to try this award winning sandwich come down to @tampa_taproom this week!”

If you’ve never visited before, you can find Tampa Taproom at 13150 N Dale Mabry Hwy. The Cuban Sandwich is loaded with ham, spiced pork, Genoa salami, Swiss cheese, dill pickles, mustard and mayo and it’s served on fresh Cuban bread.

This local gem also serves up a fiery fried jalapeno burger, Coney Island hot dogs, golden brown mozz sticks, and a tasty Philly cheesesteak flatbread. You can view the full menu on its website.

Sandrita’s (1412 W Waters Avenue), a relative newcomer to Tampa’s culinary, took second place in the Tradiitonal Cuban Sandwich competition.
