Sunda New Asian is a hit with major celebrities

Sunda New Asian is led by veteran restauranteur Billy Dec, who is also an Emmy award-winning TV personality. He founded the concept in 2009 after extensive culinary travels throughout Southeast Asia, including his mother’s native Islands of the Philippines. Sunda New Asian celebrates the diversity of cultures and cooking traditions found around the Sunda Shelf, which is now a submerged land mass in the shallow waters of the South China Sea, Gulf of Thailand and surrounding areas.

With locations already operating in Chicago and Nashville, Sunda has developed a loyal celebrity fan following including Ariana Grande, Michelle Obama, Lady Gaga, Michael Jordan, Barbra Streisand, Pete Davidson, Lebron James, Jamie Foxx, Steven Tyler, David Schwimmer and more.

“After a lifetime of visiting family throughout the Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater area, as many from the Midwest have for generations, I’ve always wanted to bring our Southeast Asian culture and modern culinary offerings to the community when the time was right,” said Dec. “The all-around explosive growth and evolution that is occurring in the area, along with the strategic location of Midtown Tampa in the middle of it all, makes that time and location, here and now and our Sunda family couldn’t be more honored, humbled and excited!” says Dec.

Experimental offerings in the works at this restaurant

Sunda takes culturally-important food and drink from Southeast Asian countries including Japan, China, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines, elevating and modernizing it with upgraded ingredients, cooking techniques and presentation. This creates a new and memorable hospitality experience that retains the deep-rooted spirit of the originals.

Experiential offerings include sushi rolling classes, a traditional island-style feast, mixology classes, sake tastings, and other culture and culinary offerings.

Menu options include creative works of art from behind the sushi bar, unrivaled dim sum, noodles, salads and rice dishes, to top of the line seafood, beef, pork and poultry, all menu options feature a creative elevation on classic Asian cuisine. Beverages include seasonally inspired craft cocktails, a progressive list of premium sakes, Asian beers, Japanese whiskies and a well-rounded list of wines and bubbles.
