With the assistance of the Florida Department of Transportation, HART was awarded funding to procure and operate the pilot AV shuttle program. The first route was launched on the Marion Street Transitway in October 2020. On November 15, 2021, HART SMART AV launched its second route in a new environment stretching from downtown Tampa to Tampa Heights alongside the Tampa Riverwalk.

The project is fully funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) with no required match on behalf of HART.

The additional route which launched in November allows local and state agencies to test the technology in a different environment which includes movement alongside the public on City of Tampa streets.

This shuttle can transport 8 people at a time. Passengers will be required to wear a seatbelt at all times when riding the shuttle.
