The City of Tampa will officially break ground Tuesday afternoon on the first phase of Rome Yards, a transformative and inclusive development in West Tampa. Partnering with Related Urban Development Group and the Tampa Housing Authority, the city will begin construction on the Gallery at Rome Yards.
Located south of Columbus Drive between Rome Avenue and the Hillsborough River, the Gallery at Rome Yards will feature 234 apartment homes, offering one, two, and three-bedroom units. Eighty percent of these units will be reserved for households earning at or below 80 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI), with the remaining 20 percent designated for workforce housing.

A major partnership between City of Tampa and Tampa Housing Authority
“This collaboration between the City of Tampa, the Tampa Housing Authority, and the Related Urban Group exemplifies the success of public and private partnerships in creating affordable housing,” said Mayor Jane Castor. “Today’s groundbreaking marks the beginning of an 18-acre development that will benefit Tampa for generations.”
Unique to this development phase are five live/work units designed for small business owners, and a workforce training center providing job training and resume-building assistance.
“This project highlights Tampa’s commitment to affordable housing,” said Nicole Travis, Tampa’s Administrator for Development and Economic Opportunity. “The Rome Yards development will provide homes for over 1,000 individuals and families.”
A $260 million mixed-use development in Tampa
As the first phase of the Rome Yards Master Plan, the Gallery at Rome Yards will convert an 18-acre former maintenance yard into a vibrant mixed-use neighborhood with 954 units of mixed-income housing. The master plan includes extensive amenities such as new green spaces, a community amphitheater, and a brick observation tower honoring West Tampa’s history.
The Gallery at Rome Yards is expected to be completed by December 2026.
Located on Downtown Tampa’s Riverfront, the Rome Yard Master Plan is set to transform a vacant City of Tampa maintenance yard into a $260+ million mixed-use and mixed-income neighborhood. A joint venture between Related Urban, Tampa Housing Authority, and the City of Tampa, Rome Yard will include 954 mixed-income units comprising rental and for-sale options for mixed-income households. Several hundred units will be dedicated for workforce and / or affordable households in the historic West Tampa community.
