The Phoenix, a nonprofit dedicated to fostering sober, active communities, will host its fourth annual “Fit To Be King” fundraising luncheon on February 20 at Armature Works in Tampa. The event begins at 11:45 a.m., and tickets are available online. It honors the late Guy King III, a prominent philanthropist and advocate for those struggling with homelessness, mental illness, and addiction. Proceeds from the event will support The Phoenix’s Tampa Bay initiatives, which include providing free weekly fitness and wellness activities and offering support and resources to individuals in recovery.
Since its establishment in 2006, The Phoenix has positively influenced over 500,000 lives nationwide, with a projected reach of 10 million in the next five years. The organization’s mission to revolutionize society’s approach to addiction and recovery has created a supportive community where individuals can connect, stay sober, and enjoy life. The Phoenix’s strategy revolves around establishing safe spaces for people to discover strength, belonging, and purpose, inspiring hope and optimism for the future.

Enjoy a diverse range of community activities in Tampa
In Tampa, The Phoenix offers a diverse range of free, in-person events, including yoga, pickleball, rock climbing, and mindful meditation. These classes are open to anyone with 48 hours of continuous sobriety, ensuring everyone can find an activity that suits their interests and needs. Since its inception in 2019, the Tampa chapter has served over 10,000 individuals, contributing to the national organization’s impact on over 560,000 people. Research indicates that 83% of members in The Phoenix’s programs remain sober after three months, demonstrating the effectiveness and inclusivity of the organization’s approach.
This year’s “Fit To Be King” luncheon features keynote speakers David Sheff, bestselling author of A Beautiful Boy, and his son, Nic Sheff, the book’s subject. David Sheff, a leading advocate for drug crisis prevention and treatment, will speak about the challenges and hope surrounding addiction recovery. Each attendee will receive a copy of Sheff’s book.

The event will also highlight The Phoenix’s extensive programming, including fitness classes, rock climbing, book clubs, movie nights, and more. Funds raised will support expanding these programs, recruiting new volunteers, and engaging in new partnerships.
