Juju Taiyaki brings sensational fish-shaped cakes to Tampa

The Bakery Box Pop Up on Dale Mabry in Tampa is no stranger to TikTok famous desserts. Juju Taiyaki is the latest sweet shop to set up operations inside the intimate space. This bakery is famed for its Japanese fish-shaped cakes stuffed with red bean, Nutella, Taro, ube and guava cheese, just to name a few flavors. You can find it at 5226 S Dale Mabry Highway.

Juju Taiyaki is available at The Bakery Box Pop Up on Mondays. You can also find their treats inside the USF K Deli. The sweet shop first started operating in the pop up kitchen at the end of August. The desserts themselves are nearly too adorable to eat. Though one sniff of the fluffy, ube filled dessert will send your cravings into overdrive. An assorted half dozen of the desserts costs about $15.

Taiyaki is a Japanese fish-shaped cake, commonly sold as street food. It imitates the shape of tai, which it is named after. The most common filling is red bean paste that is made from sweetened adzuki beans. Other common fillings include custard, chocolate, cheese, or sweet potato.

The taiyaki treats have a pleasant vanilla smell when you heat them up, and honestly I’ll take these treats over candles any day. This delicious smell is a good indicator of how they taste, which is basically like a vanilla cake with a mild custard filling.

The origin of the fish shape is unknown, but the most common belief is that, because sea bream were very expensive at the time, it was shaped in such a way as to make the eater feel as if they were eating luxuriously.
