J.C. Newman announced its intention to restore the historic Sanchez y Haya Hotel (1601 E. Columbus Drive) in Ybor City.
Here’s a brief announcement from the cigar company on Facebook:
“Our next Tampa project is the restoration of the historic Sanchez y Haya hotel across from our El Reloj cigar factory in Tampa. Built in 1910, the hotel served factory visitors and neighbors. Its storied restaurant and bar was the home to bootlegging during Prohibition and gatherings of Tampa’s criminal underworld decades ago.In the next few years, we will be working on restoring the Sanchez y Haya building to its historic grandeur and reopening it as a small inn along with a café and cigar lounge. Before we begin work, we first have to safely relocate our colony of up to 10,000 bats.”

Newman’s general counsel, said in a release. “We realized that we need to provide more amenities to host our visitors. Restoring the historic Sanchez y Haya hotel will help us welcome even more cigar lovers to Tampa’s Ybor City cigar district.”
