In an exciting move for public transit in Tampa, the Hillsborough Transit Authority (HART) announced that starting January 5, 2025, Route 1 will be fare-free for all riders. This change will make traveling between downtown Tampa and key destinations more accessible and affordable than ever.

Route 1 serves a vital corridor, connecting downtown Tampa to the University Area, the University of South Florida (USF) campus, and the VA Hospital along Florida Avenue, according to a HART press release.

Funding the change: parking fees support the initiative

Parking fees fund the fare-free service. Initially, these funds were set aside to pay for electric vehicle charging stations. However, HART decided to repurpose the funds to improve public transit. This decision reflects the authority’s commitment to enhancing service while reducing financial barriers for riders.

In addition to eliminating fares, HART will also improve the frequency of service. Buses on Route 1 will run every 15 to 20 minutes, making it easier for riders to get where they need to go, especially during peak hours, noted officials during a press conference. This change should reduce wait times and provide a more convenient option for daily commuters.

Going paperless with Flamingo Fares

Starting January 5, 2025, HART will also switch to a paperless payment system. Riders will use the Flamingo Fares app to pay for their trips on other routes, simplifying the payment process and reducing the need for physical tickets or cash.

Local officials narrowly approve new fare-free service

HART officials, Tampa City Council members, and other local leaders recently celebrated this major step forward. Councilman Luis Viera and Councilwoman Lynn Hurtak joined in the announcement, sharing their excitement about the benefits Route 1 will bring to the community.

“We are thrilled to offer this service to our riders,” said the HART team in a Facebook post. “Thanks to our partners at the City of Tampa, Route 1 will be fare-free with service every 15 minutes during peak hours, starting January 5, 2025!”

What this means for Tampa riders

The new fare-free service on Route 1 is a win for the community. It will provide a reliable, cost-free transportation option for thousands of residents, students, and visitors in the Tampa area.

With these improvements, HART is taking a bold step toward modernizing public transit in Tampa. The fare-free initiative is just the beginning of what could be a more significant trend toward more accessible and sustainable transportation options across the city.
