Founder’s Day is one of Tampa’s best annual events

Whether you’re a cigar aficionado, sandwich connoisseur, or just looking for a fun Saturday outing, Founder’s Day has something for everyone. Here’s what you won’t want to miss:

Step inside Tampa’s historic cigar factory and take a behind-the-scenes tour of the legendary El Reloj, built in 1910. Guests can explore the cigar museum, browse the factory store, and witness the legacy of J.C. Newman up close—all for free.

The day’s headline event kicks off with a rematch for the ages. Competitive eating champs Miki Sudo (10-time Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Champion) and Nick Wehry (reigning Cuban Sandwich Challenge winner) go head-to-head in a flavor-fueled competition. Known collectively as The Hungry Couple, they’ll battle it out once again to see who can take down the most iconic sandwiches the fastest. Local favorite Austin from Tampa is Life, and fearless J.C. Newman employees will join the contest.

Come hungry and stay full thanks to some of the best food vendors in Tampa Bay:

  • Bread on the Bay – Home to some of the best Latin and Italian sandwiches in town, led by world-traveled Chef Pablo Monfort.
  • Los Chapos Tacos – Authentic tacos packed with bold flavors.
  • Engine 53 Pizza – Fired-up mobile pizza on wheels.
  • Frios Gourmet Pops – Colorful frozen treats for the whole family.

This event isn’t just for adults. Kids will enjoy hands-on science experiments hosted by MOSI, plus lawn games and live music throughout the day.

One of the day’s coolest perks? Sanchez y Haya cigars—a revival of Tampa’s first cigar brand from 1886—will be available for just $0.05 each with any $20 purchase (limit 2 per person). That’s not a typo. It’s a true throwback price in honor of Founder’s Day.

There’s also a designated outdoor smoking lounge, complete with ashtrays, for guests to enjoy their purchases. Please note that cigar smoking is allowed outside only.
