REWIND SERIES SCREENING

In 2011, Ryan Gosling wasn’t Ryan Gosling yet. For casual moviegoers, he was still the guy from The Notebook. For viewers of a certain age, he was the guy from The Mickey Mouse Club. For more serious film aficionados, he was the guy who was in The Notebook, Half Nelson, took a few years off and then did Blue Valentine. He had a Brando-esque energy on the screen, but so do three-fifths of hot male actors that Hollywood is trying, at any given time, to turn into leading men. You can be a Brando, a Tom Hanks or a Clint Eastwood. Until you see enough success to carve your own path, those are the options.
So it was smart, professionally, for Ryan Gosling to choose 2011 to stretch his legs and do an action movie. It was brave, however, to pick one where his character barely talks. He’s not even named! And it was kind of astonishing put next to the other two movies he does in 2011: Crazy, Stupid, Love, a sweet romantic comedy with Emma Stone in the middle of her first star making launch and Steve Carell at the height of his powers and ready to leave The Office; and The Ides of March, a relatively straightforward political drama that turns into a serious-acting cage-match as he goes up against George Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Paul Giamatti. Gosling exits 2011 as a true movie star, giving magnetic performances with four-quadrant appeal. Just like that he had his Eastwood, his Hanks and his Brando in one calendar year. All that and the jacket? What’s not to love?
