Tom Petty, was born and raised in Florida, so it’s only fitting that Florida’s best community radio station will be the only radio station in the state celebrating his birthday with a full night of Tom Petty’s music. Like Tom Petty, 88.5 WMNF got it’s start in the late 70’s. Both Petty and WMNF rejected the bland sounds of classic rock radio at the end of the 70’s, instead moving towards a blend of Byrdsy Folk, Punk, New Wave, Garage rock and Dylaneque singer/songwriters for a unique sound not found before.
WMNF presents: The 5th annual Tom Petty Birthday Tribute show, on Saturday, Oct 5th from 5pm to 11 at Skipper’s Smokehouse in Tampa. WMNF is celebrating with at least a dozen bands doing covers of over 40 of his best songs from 26 albums. Each band covering approximately 3-5 songs by Tom Petty in their own style–it’s a non-stop music event that will be remembered for years to come.
“I’ve had more bands ask to play the Tom Petty Tribute than any other tribute since I started these 15 years ago. He’s our home state guy—we love him.” Said Flee, WNNF Music Director. Look for songs that span Petty’s entire career from his first album to his most recent release Mojo. There will be songs by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Traveling Wilburys, Tom Petty solo and Mudcrutch.
You know you want to be there. Breakdown and get your advance tickets at www.wmnf.org. Everyone gets lucky sometimes and this is one concert that’s going to “feel so good and so free and so right, we ain’t never gonna change our minds about it.”
