A virtual artist reception is scheduled for Thursday, January 28, 2021 from 6:00–7:00 p.m.

Ya La’Ford is a prolific arts whose public installations have invigorated and enlivened the spaces they occupy. Her work with kids in the Tampa Bay community, lectures, and commitment to supporting the area arts scene have made Ya La’Ford an emerging arts bastion.

La’ford working with area nonprofits

Her contributions to the likes of Metro Inclusive Health, SHINE Mural Fest, and The Community Foundation of Tampa Bay underscore La’ford’s resolve to always uplift local organizations.

It’s easy to lose yourself in the labyrinthian designs she adorns walls with. Her work often reflects a sense of connection and togetherness, and as we enter monuments and historic new era, it seems only fitting that we begin anew with La’Ford’s dis·tance.

Ya La’ford (b.1979, Bronx) is an internationally recognized artist whose bold, geometric works explore themes of journey, transportation, transformation and transcendence.

In dis·tance, at Gallery221@HCC, La’ford re-evaluates and reimagines space and connection in this era of expanding interspace. With paintings, sculptures, and a site-specific installation, La’ford questions how we can find liberty and stability at a moment when time and space can at once be measured physically, computationally, and psychologically, and often these metrics contradict one another and complicate our collective experience.

Prolific artist with installations across the region

Ya La’ford received her MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from The Art Institute of Boston in 2012. She also holds a JD from the University of Florida’s Levin College of Law.

La’ford’s work can be found in permanent collections of organizations including SPP, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundations, the Vinik Family Foundation, and Nike. She has notably exhibited at the Tampa Museum of Fine Arts, Orlando Museum of Fine Art as a Prize Artist, Asia Contemporary, Venice Biennale Activation Projects, Yeelen Gallery, and Snap! Orlando, and
has an upcoming exhibition at The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art.

She has also completed public installations on exterior walls throughout Tampa Bay, including at USF, the Historic Manhattan Casino, the Hyatt Place St. Petersburg, the Community Foundation, Tropicana Field, the Morean Arts Center, the James Weldon Johnson Public Library, Al Lang Stadium, and many more nationally & internationally.
