Gas Worx is set to be one of the largest mixed use developments in the city, and it will provide a vital connection between Ybor City and the Water Street Tampa neighborhoods. Current plans detail a community featuring nearly 5,000 new residences, and nearly 150,000-square-feet of retail development. Plans also call for uptown 500,000 square feet of office space. Developers are set to include 325 affordable housing units, as well.
Tampa City Council provided unanimous approval for the project, and developers are set to break ground on phase I soon. Gas Worx, named in honor of the gas production facility owned by TECO and People’s Gas., represents a partnership between Darryl Shaw and community developer Kettler Inc.
Developers have described Gas Worx as a “transit-oriented community.” This is due to their heightened focus on fixing infrastructure, adding new multi-use trails, and even creating a new stop for the TECO Streetcar.
Gas Worx will include nearly 2 miles of new streets to enhance the Ybor street grid. Pedestrians will be able to enjoy 3.6 miles of new sidewalks, while runners, and cyclists can explore an additional 1.2 miles of trails..
An official groundbreaking is set to take place sometime in September, with immediate work to begin on residences. The phase I residential units will include affordable units that will be connected by a pedestrian sky bridge, according to Darryl Shaw.
